Best Vacuum Sealers (All Types Compared)

The best vacuum sealer is the one built for what you actually seal. Freezing steaks from a bulk pack, bagging sous vide chicken, sealing chili, and resealing half a block of cheese are four different jobs, and no single machine is best at all of them. Countertop external sealers win on price and bag length, chamber sealers win on liquids and bag cost, and handhelds win on convenience.

We compared current models across all three types on the specs that decide everyday use: bag width, how they handle moisture, duty cycle (how many bags before a cool-down), and size. Seven picks follow, then a buying guide that explains the trade-offs.

Chamber vs external: how each one pulls the air

Step through the cycle
Chamber sealerThe whole pouch goes inside the box
Cross-section of a chamber vacuum sealer: the whole pouch sits inside a closed chamber that the pump empties Lid and gasket Pump Seal bar Air leaves the chamber and pouch together Seal bar closes the pouch at full vacuum Air returns and presses the pouch tight

The pump empties the whole chamber, so pressure falls inside and outside the pouch at the same rate. Nothing is pushed toward the opening, which is why liquids stay in the pouch.

External (suction) sealerOnly the bag mouth goes into the machine
Cross-section of an external vacuum sealer: only the bag mouth is clamped in the machine and air is pulled out through it Lid clamps the bag mouth Bag stays outside Pump Air and liquid leave through the bag mouth Heat strip seals inside the clamp Outside air pressed the bag tight all along

The pump pulls air out through the bag mouth along the embossed channels. Outside air keeps pressing on the bag, and any liquid travels with the air toward the seal.

Schematic, not to scale. Under deep chamber vacuum, warm liquids boil, so chill soups and marinades before sealing. External sealers need embossed bags; chamber sealers use smooth pouches.

The best vacuum sealers, reviewed

1. Nesco VS-12 Deluxe: Best Overall

Who it's for: households that seal meat, produce and leftovers a few times a week and want a reliable machine without a learning curve.

The VS-12 covers everything most people need from a countertop sealer. Nesco lists a 130 W double vacuum pump, three seal settings (Dry, Moist and Double), and a choice of Normal or Gentle vacuum pressure so bread and berries do not get crushed. The double heat seal adds insurance for freezer bags and damp food. An easy-lock handle allows one-handed operation, a viewing window helps you line up the bag, and built-in roll storage with a sliding cutter means custom-length bags without scissors. Two rolls come in the box, 8.6 in. and 11.8 in. wide.

It is a 6 lb machine with a 1-year warranty, so it is not built for 200-bag hunting weekends. It also handles moisture, not liquids. We cover it in depth in our Nesco VS-12 Deluxe review.

Pros

  • Dry, Moist and Double seal settings
  • Gentle vacuum for soft foods
  • Roll storage and cutter built in
  • Compact at 15.75 x 8 x 4.5 in.

Cons

  • 1-year warranty
  • Not for long, continuous sessions
  • Not for soups or marinades

2. FoodSaver V4400 2-in-1: Best Automatic

Who it's for: people who want to drop a bag in and walk away, and who also want a handheld sealer for zipper bags and canisters.

FoodSaver's V4400 detects the bag automatically when you insert it, then runs the cycle. It also detects moisture and switches to the right mode, and a removable, dishwasher-safe drip tray catches overflow. Built-in roll storage and a cutter make custom bags, and the built-in handheld sealer works with FoodSaver zipper bags, canisters and containers. It accepts FoodSaver 8 in. and 11 in. rolls.

The trade-offs are size (it is listed at 10 lb and 11 x 20 x 12 in.) and the fact that it ties you to FoodSaver-compatible accessories for the handheld. The automation helps beginners but leaves you less manual control than the Nesco's gentle setting.

Pros

  • Automatic bag and moisture detection
  • Handheld sealer included
  • Removable, dishwasher-safe drip tray
  • Roll storage and cutter

Cons

  • Larger and heavier than most external sealers
  • Handheld works best with FoodSaver accessories
  • Not for liquids

3. Anova Precision Vacuum Sealer Pro: Best for Sous Vide

Who it's for: sous vide cooks who want a sealer that handles juicy proteins and fits Anova's ecosystem.

Anova designed the Pro (model ANVS02) as the step up from its slim sealer, and it shows. It has a double sealer, a wet function that uses lower suction for juicy food, built-in storage for a full roll with a sliding cutter (a 19 ft roll is included), an accessory port and hose for jar lids and containers, and one-handed clamping. Its modes cover Vacuum and Seal, Moist, Dry, Seal, Pulse Vacuum and External Pulse Vacuum. Pulse lets you stop before a delicate fish fillet gets squashed. At 14.75 x 7 x 4.3 in., it is compact for a roll-storage machine.

The listing is inconsistent on warranty (the title says 2 years, the details say 5), so confirm at purchase. If sous vide is your main reason for buying, compare it with the other options in our best vacuum sealers for sous vide guide.

Pros

  • Wet mode and pulse control
  • Roll storage and cutter
  • Accessory port and hose
  • One-handed operation

Cons

  • Warranty terms unclear on the listing
  • Weight not published
  • Still not a soup machine

4. Avid Armor USV20: Best for Liquids

Who it's for: anyone who wants to seal soups, stocks, chili, marinades or wet game, and anyone who seals often enough that bag costs matter.

This is the one chamber sealer on this list, and it is here because no external sealer handles liquids properly. The USV20 removes air from the whole chamber, so liquid stays in the pouch. Avid Armor lists an 11.5 in. seal bar for pouches up to 11 x 10 in., a dry rocker pump with no oil, adjustable vacuum time from 15 to 60 seconds, a marinate mode and an accessory hose. At about 17.5 lb, it is light for a chamber machine. Smooth chamber pouches cost less than embossed bags, so heavy users get some of the price difference back.

The limits are pouch length (10 in.), a 3 in. chamber height, and lid clearance (17 in. to open). For bigger or tougher chamber machines, see our best chamber vacuum sealers.

Pros

  • Seals liquids cleanly
  • Cheaper smooth pouches
  • Dry pump, timed control, marinate mode

Cons

  • Limited to 11 x 10 in. pouches
  • Bigger than any external sealer here
  • Mid-range price tier

5. Weston Pro-2300: Best Heavy-Duty

Who it's for: hunters, anglers and bulk buyers who seal dozens of bags in a row and need wide bags.

The Pro-2300 is the external sealer for big jobs. The Amazon listing for the current model (65-0220-W) gives a fan-cooled motor, 1,020 W of power, a stainless steel body and an extra-wide, 5 mm seal bar that takes bags up to 15 in. across. Weston rated the double-piston pump of the earlier 65-0201 version at up to 28 inHg. Weston has long paired one-touch automatic operation with a manual mode for delicate foods on this model. That 15 in. width handles whole fish, briskets and large game roasts that no home chamber sealer can fit.

It is a big machine (the earlier 65-0201 was listed at about 22 lb), so plan a home for it. Like all external sealers, it needs embossed bags and freezing for liquids. For more production-scale options, see our commercial vacuum sealer guide.

Pros

  • Fan-cooled for continuous sealing
  • Bags up to 15 in. wide
  • 5 mm wide seal; 1,020 W
  • Manual mode for soft foods

Cons

  • Heavy and large
  • Premium price tier for an external sealer
  • Needs embossed bags

6. FoodSaver PowerVac VS0150: Best Compact

Who it's for: small kitchens and occasional users who want to store a sealer upright in a cabinet.

The PowerVac's design trick is vertical storage, so it takes a sliver of cabinet space. FoodSaver says it seals with 35% less bag waste than its previous models, offers Dry and Moist settings, has a built-in alignment tray for bag placement, and can connect to a FoodSaver handheld sealer. The box includes an 11 in. x 8 ft roll and a few pre-cut bags.

It does not list roll storage, a cutter or a double seal, so it is a light-duty machine. For a few bags a week, that is fine.

Pros

  • Stores vertically
  • Dry and Moist settings
  • Alignment tray reduces bag waste

Cons

  • No listed roll storage, cutter or double seal
  • Light duty

7. Chef Preserve: Best Handheld

Who it's for: people who mostly store leftovers, cheese, produce and deli meat in the fridge and want a sealer they will actually use daily.

Chef Preserve is a rechargeable handheld that pumps air out of its own reusable zip bags through a valve. The company says it seals a bag in under 5 seconds and shuts off automatically, and it runs on a 1,200 mAh battery that charges over USB. The device is 8 x 1.8 in. and weighs 8.3 oz. The bags are BPA-free and rated dishwasher, freezer, refrigerator and microwave safe. Chef Preserve sells the device with 10, 20 or 30 bags; in each kit, half are 1-quart and half are 2-quart bags. It comes with a 2-year warranty and a 60-day money-back guarantee.

A handheld does not heat-seal, so it is not a replacement for a countertop sealer for long-term freezer storage or sous vide at higher temperatures. Our handheld vacuum sealer guide compares other options.

Pros

  • Pocket-size and cordless
  • Reusable bags; fast, simple operation
  • 2-year warranty

Cons

  • Works only with valve zip bags
  • No heat seal
  • Smaller bags than countertop rolls

Buying guide: how to choose the best vacuum sealer for food

External, chamber or handheld?

  • External (suction) sealers clamp the bag's open end and pull air out through embossed channels. They are the best value, take long rolls, and store easily, but they struggle with liquids.
  • Chamber sealers put the whole bag in a sealed box, so they handle liquids and use cheaper smooth pouches. They cost more and weigh much more.
  • Handhelds pump air out of special valve bags. They are convenient for the fridge but do not heat-seal.

Our chamber vs external vacuum sealer comparison covers the mechanics in detail.

Seal bar width and bag size

Most home external sealers take 11 to 12 in. rolls. If you seal briskets, whole fish or big roasts, look for a wide bar like the Weston Pro-2300's 15 in. capacity. Chamber sealers are limited by their seal bar and chamber: about 10 to 12.25 in. wide on home tabletop models.

Moisture handling

Look for a moist mode (lower suction or longer seal), a pulse button to stop the vacuum manually, and a removable drip tray. These help with marinated meat and juicy produce. For soup, stock or sauce, either freeze it flat first or use a chamber sealer.

Double seal

Two seal lines, or one wide seal, add margin for freezer bags and damp food. The Nesco VS-12 and Anova Pro both offer a double seal, FoodSaver's FM2100 uses dual heat-sealing strips, and Weston uses a 5 mm wide seal.

Duty cycle

Budget sealers can overheat after a run of bags and need to cool down. If you process meat in bulk, choose a fan-cooled model like the Weston Pro-2300, or a chamber sealer.

Convenience features

Roll storage with a cutter saves time and bag waste. Automatic bag detection (FoodSaver V4400) helps beginners. An accessory port lets you vacuum canisters and jar lids.

Bag costs

Embossed bags and rolls are the main running cost of an external sealer. Chamber pouches are cheaper, and handheld valve bags are reusable. If you seal hundreds of bags a year, factor bags into the real price of the machine.

Food safety: what a vacuum sealer can and cannot do

Vacuum sealing slows freezer burn and spoilage, but it does not make food shelf-stable. Clemson Cooperative Extension states that vacuum packaging is not a substitute for refrigeration or freezing. FDA's guidance on reduced-oxygen packaging (Fish and Fishery Products Hazards and Controls, Chapter 13) explains the risk: removing oxygen holds back the spoilage bacteria that warn you, while Clostridium botulinum can still grow in low-acid foods, some types at temperatures as low as 38 °F (3.3 °C). Refrigerate sealed perishables at 40 °F or below, freeze for long storage, and per USDA FSIS, food kept constantly at 0 °F stays safe, with freezer times affecting only quality.

How we chose

We did not run hands-on tests. We researched current models across all three sealer types using manufacturer product pages and official retail listings, compared published specs (bag width, modes, cooling, weight and warranty), looked at recurring themes in owner feedback, and favored long-running brands that sell replacement gaskets and bags. Where a listing contradicts itself, we say so.

FAQ

What type of vacuum sealer is best for home use?

For most homes, a countertop external sealer with dry and moist modes and roll storage is the best value. Choose a chamber sealer if you seal liquids or seal often, and a handheld if you mostly reseal leftovers in reusable zip bags.

What is the top rated vacuum sealer?

Ratings shift with every new listing, so match the type to your use instead. Nesco, FoodSaver, Anova and Weston have long-running external models, and Avid Armor and VacMaster are the established chamber brands. Check that any model has replacement gaskets and a warranty.

What is the best vacuum sealer for food with liquids?

A chamber vacuum sealer. It removes air from the whole chamber, so soups and marinades stay in the bag. With an external sealer, freeze liquids flat first and seal the frozen block.

Are double seals worth it?

Yes for freezer storage and wet foods. Two seal lines, or one wide seal, give a margin if one line has a gap from moisture or a wrinkle. The Nesco VS-12 and Anova Pro offer double seals, and the Weston Pro-2300 uses a 5 mm wide seal.

How long does vacuum-sealed food last?

Longer in quality, not indefinitely in safety. USDA FSIS says food kept constantly at 0 °F is always safe and storage times are for quality, while refrigerated food still needs 40 °F or below. Vacuum sealing does not replace refrigeration.

Verdict

The Nesco VS-12 Deluxe is the best vacuum sealer for most kitchens: capable, simple and compact. Choose the FoodSaver V4400 if you want automation, the Anova Precision Vacuum Sealer Pro for sous vide, and the Avid Armor USV20 chamber sealer if liquids or heavy use are part of the plan. For big batches with wide bags, the Weston Pro-2300 is the external workhorse.
