A handheld vacuum sealer is the one you actually reach for on a Tuesday night. Instead of hauling out a countertop machine to seal half an onion's worth of leftovers, you zip a reusable bag, press a small pump to the valve, and you are done in seconds. The trade-off is that handhelds do not heat-seal, so they are best for the fridge and short freezer stints, not for a year of venison.
What separates good handhelds is battery life, the bag and container system (you are locked into it), and what else the system can do, such as jars, marinating or a heat-seal base. Six real, current picks follow, then a buying guide.

The best handheld vacuum sealers, reviewed
1. Chef Preserve Compact Vacuum Sealer: Best Overall
Who it's for: people who want to keep produce, cheese, deli meat and leftovers fresher in the fridge, with a gadget small enough for a drawer.
Chef Preserve does one thing and keeps it simple. You fill a valve bag, zip it, press the button, and the device stops on its own when the bag is sealed. Chef Preserve says it seals in about 5 seconds, runs on a 1,200 mAh battery with 5V USB charging, and handles 500 to 1,000 bags per charge. It measures 8 x 1.8 in. and weighs 8.3 oz, per the brand. The bags are reusable and described as freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe, and Chef Preserve also sells vacuum containers in four sizes.
The limits are the same as any valve-bag system: no heat seal, and you buy the brand's bags. Chef Preserve backs it with a 2-year warranty and a 60-day money-back guarantee. Read our full Chef Preserve review for the details.
Pros
- Very small and light
- Long battery claim; USB charging
- Reusable, dishwasher-safe bags
- 2-year warranty
Cons
- Proprietary valve bags
- No heat seal
- Not for long-term freezer storage of meat

2. FoodSaver Handheld+ 2-in-1: Best With a Heat-Seal Base
Who it's for: households that want a cordless handheld for daily use and a heat sealer for the freezer, without owning two separate machines.
This is the most versatile system here. The Handheld+ pairs a countertop base with a detachable cordless handheld. According to Newell Brands' launch announcement, the handheld vacuum seals containers, jars, reusable bags and wine bottles, runs a 12-minute marinate cycle, and seals up to 35 quart zipper bags per charge. The base heat-seals standard FoodSaver bags and rolls and has a removable, dishwasher-safe drip tray. It works with FoodSaver's bags and rolls, Preserve & Marinate containers, bottle stoppers and jar sealers.
The base takes counter or cabinet space, so it is less compact than a pocket handheld, and you are buying into FoodSaver's accessory system.
Pros
- Cordless handheld plus a heat-seal base
- 12-minute marinate cycle
- Works with FoodSaver jar sealers and containers
Cons
- Bulkier than standalone handhelds
- Tied to FoodSaver accessories
- Shorter rated battery life than Chef Preserve

3. ZWILLING Fresh & Save: Best for Sous Vide and Containers
Who it's for: cooks who prefer glass containers, meal-preppers, and sous vide fans who want reusable bags.
ZWILLING built Fresh & Save as a whole storage system: a rechargeable pump, valve bags, and glass and plastic containers with valve lids. The pump charges by USB through a socket on the pump and stops automatically once it reaches enough vacuum. ZWILLING lists BPA-free bags that are freezer-safe, microwave-safe without the vacuum seal, and rated for sous vide with heat resistance to 197.60 °F. ZWILLING says all its Fresh & Save pumps and lids are compatible with each other.
The pump-and-bag set is mid-range for a handheld, and ZWILLING does not publish a battery runtime. If you will use the containers, the system makes more sense than a bag-only pump.
Pros
- Bags with a published sous vide heat rating
- Container ecosystem, including glass
- Automatic stop
Cons
- Mid-range price tier for a handheld
- No battery runtime published
- Proprietary bags and lids

4. FoodSaver Mini Handheld: Best for FoodSaver Accessories
Who it's for: FoodSaver owners who want a small cordless unit for zipper bags, marinating containers and jar sealers.
The Mini is FoodSaver's standalone cordless handheld. Its listing title and description cover a marinate setting, an auto-off function, a charging dock, and LED lights for sealing progress and battery level, and it ships with two quart zipper bags. It works with FoodSaver vacuum zipper bags and FoodSaver accessories such as jar sealers, bottle stoppers and Preserve & Marinate containers.
Retail listings disagree on charge time and bags per charge, so we do not quote a figure. If you already own FoodSaver canisters or jar sealers, this is the cheapest way to use them without a countertop machine.
Pros
- Works with FoodSaver jar sealers and containers
- Marinate setting
- Charging dock
Cons
- Battery figures inconsistent across listings
- Tied to FoodSaver zipper bags

5. Nesco VS-09HHS2 Handheld Vacuum Sealer Kit: Best Starter Kit
Who it's for: budget shoppers who want containers and bags in the box.
Nesco's kit is the best-equipped starter set here. Nesco lists cordless operation with a rechargeable battery, a charging base and wall adapter, two 600 ml and two 800 ml resealable canisters, and five reusable zip and seal bags. A removable outer suction base catches excess liquid. Replacement bags are sold as Nesco models VS-10HB and VS-11HB.
Nesco does not publish battery capacity or bags per charge, and the manual for its earlier VS-09HH handheld says the bags are not recommended for liquids. It sits in the budget price tier.
Pros
- Canisters and bags included
- Charging base
- Budget price tier
Cons
- No published battery runtime
- Not for liquids
- Nesco bags only

6. Nesco VS-MJ-2N1: Best for Mason Jars
Who it's for: anyone whose "handheld sealing" is mostly pantry jars of coffee, nuts, rice or dehydrated food.
This cordless, rechargeable unit sits on top of a mason jar lid instead of a bag valve. Nesco lists one-button operation, automatic power-off, an LED display for battery and seal time, and support for regular and wide-mouth jars, with 5 lids of each size and a jar opener in the box. Nesco says jar vacuum sealing is not equivalent to heat or pressure canning. Compare it with jar attachments and chamber machines in our mason jar vacuum sealer guide.
Pros
- Regular and wide-mouth jars
- Lids included
- Cordless
Cons
- Jars only
- No published battery runtime

Buying guide: how to choose a handheld vacuum sealer
Handheld or countertop?
A handheld wins on convenience and storage. A countertop heat sealer wins for freezer storage of meat, bulk batches, and sous vide at high temperatures, because a melted seal is more robust than a zip and valve. Many kitchens own both. Compare the full range in our best vacuum sealers guide, or see compact vacuum sealers if space is the issue.
The bag system is the real purchase
Every handheld uses its own valve bags or lids. Before buying, check the sizes on offer, whether bags are reusable and dishwasher-safe, and whether the brand sells containers. Factor the ongoing cost of bags into the price.
Battery and charging
Look for a published bags-per-charge figure and a convenient charger. Chef Preserve publishes 500 to 1,000 bags and uses USB; FoodSaver publishes 35 quart zipper bags for the Handheld+. Others do not publish a number.
Liquids and wet food
Handhelds pull air through a valve, so liquids and wet marinades can be drawn toward it. ZWILLING includes a liquid barrier in its set, and Nesco's kit has a base that catches liquid. For soups and sauces, use containers or see our guide to vacuum sealing liquids.
Extras
Marinate cycles (FoodSaver), container ecosystems (ZWILLING, Chef Preserve, Nesco), jar sealing (FoodSaver, Nesco) and a heat-seal base (FoodSaver Handheld+) all add flexibility.
Tips for using a handheld vacuum sealer
- Close the zipper fully, end to end, before you start. Most failed handheld seals come from a gap in the zipper.
- Keep the valve clean and dry. Crumbs or juice on the valve let air seep back in.
- Lay the bag flat, valve up, and press food away from the valve.
- Use containers for soft or wet food. Bread, berries, soups and stews do better in a rigid valve container.
- Chill food first. Cold food releases less moisture toward the valve.
- Check bags the next day. A bag that has gone loose has lost its vacuum; reseal it or use the food soon.
Food safety with handheld sealers
Removing air slows spoilage, but it does not make perishable food safe at room temperature. Clemson Cooperative Extension (HGIC 3865) says vacuum packaging is not a substitute for proper processing of food meant to be stored at room temperature, and warns that Clostridium botulinum can grow in moist, low-acid foods in low-oxygen packages. Keep sealed perishables at 40 °F or below, as USDA FSIS advises, and use leftovers within the usual 3 to 4 days. Michigan State University Extension also notes that vacuum sealer makers advise against vacuum packaging raw onions, fresh mushrooms and fresh garlic because of botulism concerns.
For the basics of sealing, see how to use a vacuum sealer.
How we chose
We did not test these sealers. We researched current cordless and handheld models using manufacturer product pages, a manufacturer launch announcement and official retail listings, and compared battery claims, charging, bag and container systems, and extras. Where listings contradict each other (as with the FoodSaver Mini's battery figures), we leave the number out.
FAQ
Are handheld vacuum sealers any good?
Yes, for short-term fridge storage, leftovers, produce, cheese and quick marinades. They pull air through a valve in reusable zip bags or container lids. They do not heat-seal, so for long-term freezer storage or heavy sous vide use, a countertop sealer is more reliable.
What is the best cordless vacuum sealer?
Chef Preserve is the simplest cordless pick, with a USB-rechargeable battery the brand rates at 500 to 1,000 bags per charge. If you want a cordless unit plus a heat-seal base for freezer bags, FoodSaver's Handheld+ 2-in-1 covers both.
Can a handheld vacuum sealer use regular vacuum sealer bags?
No. Handheld pumps need bags with a one-way valve, or valve lids on containers. Embossed rolls and heat-seal bags need a countertop sealer, although some combo systems like the FoodSaver Handheld+ include a heat-seal base.
Can you freeze food in handheld vacuum bags?
Yes. Chef Preserve, ZWILLING and FoodSaver describe their valve bags as freezer-safe. For long freezer storage, check the valve and zipper are closed and clean, and use thicker heat-sealed bags for anything you want to keep many months.
How long does a rechargeable vacuum sealer battery last?
It depends on the model. Chef Preserve says 500 to 1,000 bags per charge, and FoodSaver says its Handheld+ seals up to 35 quart zipper bags per charge. ZWILLING and Nesco do not publish a figure for their pumps.
Verdict
The Chef Preserve Compact Vacuum Sealer is the best handheld vacuum sealer for most people: tiny, cordless and quick, with reusable bags and a 2-year warranty. Choose the FoodSaver Handheld+ 2-in-1 if you also want heat-sealed freezer bags, or the ZWILLING Fresh & Save if you prefer glass containers and reusable sous vide bags.
