Most vacuum sealers are sized for a counter you do not have. If you live in an apartment, cook in an RV galley, or just refuse to give up a cabinet shelf, a compact vacuum sealer is the better buy: light enough to pull out in one hand, small enough to slide into a drawer or stand upright, and simple enough that you actually use it.

Size cuts both ways. Small sealers usually give up pump strength, roll storage and duty cycle. We picked six compact and portable models that keep the trade-offs reasonable, from a 2.3 lb slim sealer to the smallest chamber machine in Avid Armor's line.

The best compact vacuum sealers, reviewed

1. Anova Precision Vacuum Sealer: Best Overall

Who it's for: apartment cooks and occasional sous vide users who want a real heat sealer that lives in a drawer.

At 2.3 lb and 16.73 x 4.80 x 3.14 in., per Anova, this is the lightest heat-sealing machine in our comparison. It keeps the controls to three buttons: vacuum and seal, seal only, and pulse vacuum. The pulse button lets you stop before bread or berries get crushed. It ships with 10 pre-cut bags and a 2-year warranty.

Anova lists -0.5 bar of vacuum and a 4 L/min extraction rate, modest numbers that are fine for steaks, cheese and leftovers but slower on big bags. There is no roll storage, cutter or double seal.

Pros

  • Very light; slim enough for a drawer
  • Pulse vacuum
  • 2-year warranty

Cons

  • Modest vacuum strength
  • No roll storage or double seal

2. Nesco VS-C1 Classic: Best Budget

Who it's for: budget buyers who seal a few bags a month and want the thinnest footprint.

Nesco lists the VS-C1 at 15.16 x 3.35 x 4.92 in., the slimmest profile here, with an 80 W motor. Controls cover Vacuum and Seal, Seal only, Pulse and Cancel, and it takes bags up to 11.8 in. wide, so standard 11 in. rolls work. It comes with 10 quart-size bags (8.6 x 11.8 in.).

Nesco does not list weight, a vacuum rating or warranty terms on the product page, and there is no built-in cutter or roll storage. For a first sealer on a tight budget, it covers the basics.

Pros

  • Slimmest model in our comparison
  • Pulse mode for soft food
  • Takes bags up to 11.8 in. wide

Cons

  • No cutter or roll storage
  • Few published specs

3. FoodSaver PowerVac VS0150: Best Vertical Storage

Who it's for: kitchens with tall, narrow cabinet space and FoodSaver users.

The PowerVac's party trick is that it stands on end, so it takes up a sliver of a shelf instead of a whole one. FoodSaver says it seals with 35% less bag waste than its previous models, and it offers Dry and Moist settings and an alignment tray that helps you place the bag. Retail listings give a weight of about 3 lb and include an 11 in. x 8 ft roll and a few pre-cut bags.

FoodSaver does not list roll storage, a cutter or a double seal for this model, so treat it as a light-duty sealer.

Pros

  • Stores upright
  • Dry and Moist settings
  • Alignment tray reduces wasted bag

Cons

  • No listed roll storage, cutter or double seal
  • Light duty

4. Anova Precision Vacuum Sealer Pro: Best Compact With Roll Storage

Who it's for: small kitchens that still want the convenience of a full-feature sealer.

Most sealers with roll storage are big. The Anova Pro fits roll storage, a sliding cutter, a double seal, moist and dry settings and an accessory port with hose into 14.75 x 7 x 4.3 in., per Anova. That makes it the best choice if you want custom bag lengths without dedicating a shelf. Anova lists 110 W, a 12 L/min extraction rate, and a 2-year warranty with a 100-day money-back guarantee.

It is wider than the slim models above and Anova does not publish its weight. For more full-size options, see our best vacuum sealers roundup.

Pros

  • Roll storage and cutter in a compact body
  • Double seal; moist and dry settings
  • Accessory port for jars and containers

Cons

  • Wider than slim sealers
  • Weight not published

5. Chef Preserve: Best Portable

Who it's for: travelers, campers, boaters and anyone who wants a sealer with no cord at all.

Chef Preserve is small enough for a jacket pocket: 8 x 1.8 in. and 8.3 oz, per the brand. It charges by 5V USB, runs a 1,200 mAh battery, and Chef Preserve says one charge handles 500 to 1,000 bags. Press it to the valve on one of its zip bags and it seals in about 5 seconds and shuts off automatically. The bags are reusable and described as freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe. The warranty is 2 years.

There is no heat seal, so it suits fridge and cooler storage more than long freezer storage. Our Chef Preserve review covers it in depth, and our handheld vacuum sealer guide compares rivals.

Pros

  • No outlet needed; USB charging
  • Tiny and light
  • Reusable bags

Cons

  • Proprietary bags
  • No heat seal

6. Avid Armor USV1: Best Compact Chamber

Who it's for: small-space cooks who want to seal soups, brines and marinades.

Chamber sealers are usually the opposite of compact, which is why the USV1 stands out. Avid Armor lists it at 12 x 12 x 6.25 in. and 13 lb, calls it the only chamber sealer in its line light enough to lift with one hand, and pitches it at apartments, RVs and boats. It takes pouches up to 10 x 10 in., has three vacuum levels and three seal-time settings, one-touch Auto Vac and Seal, and a pouch ledge and clamp that position the bag for you.

It is heavier than any external sealer here and limited to portion-sized pouches. In exchange, it seals liquids that no compact external sealer can. See our Avid Armor chamber sealer review for the bigger models.

Pros

  • Seals liquids and delicate food
  • Smallest chamber sealer from Avid Armor
  • Easy pouch positioning

Cons

  • About 13 lb
  • Pouches limited to 10 x 10 in.
  • Mid-range price tier

Buying guide: how to choose a compact vacuum sealer

Measure where it will live

Check the drawer depth or shelf height before you buy. Slim sealers like the Anova and Nesco VS-C1 are long but thin; the FoodSaver PowerVac is designed to stand upright; the USV1 is a cube that needs about a foot of counter space and room to open the lid.

Accept lighter duty

Compact external sealers have smaller motors and no cooling fans. Plan on a few bags per session with breaks. If you process meat in bulk, a compact sealer is the wrong tool; look at fan-cooled or chamber models instead.

Roll storage or pre-cut bags?

Pre-cut bags keep the machine small. Roll storage saves money and waste, but adds width. The Anova Pro is the most compact roll-storage design we found.

Corded or cordless?

Cordless handhelds are the most portable, but they need valve bags and do not heat-seal. Corded compact sealers heat-seal standard embossed bags, which last longer in the freezer.

External or chamber?

A compact external sealer is the space-saving choice. A compact chamber sealer is the space-saving choice for liquids. Our chamber vs external vacuum sealer comparison explains the difference.

Gasket care in small sealers

Small sealers rely on foam gaskets that compress over time. Nesco's care guides say to store the sealer with the lid unlocked to keep the gaskets from deforming, which applies to most clamp-style sealers.

Compact sealers for RVs, boats and camping

  • No shore power: a USB-rechargeable handheld such as Chef Preserve is the only option here that needs no outlet. Charge it from a power bank or a vehicle USB port.
  • Limited power: check the wattage on your inverter. Nesco lists 80 W for the VS-C1 and Anova lists 110 W for the Pro, both modest loads; chamber sealers draw more (Anova lists 280 W for its chamber model).
  • Galley storage: slim sealers fit in a drawer; the USV1's 12 in. cube needs a dedicated cabinet.
  • Fish on the water: if you seal your catch, keep it iced and freeze it promptly, and see our guide to how long vacuum-sealed meat lasts for the fish thawing rules.

Food safety on the road and at home

A vacuum seal does not replace cold storage. Clemson Cooperative Extension (HGIC 3865) warns that Clostridium botulinum can grow at room temperature in moist, low-acid, low-oxygen foods, so vacuum-sealed perishables still belong at 40 °F or below or in the freezer. In a cooler, keep sealed food on ice and use it as you would any refrigerated food. USDA FSIS advises discarding perishables left out more than 2 hours (1 hour above 90 °F).

How we chose

We did not test these sealers. We researched compact and portable models using manufacturer product pages and official retail listings, and compared size, weight, bag compatibility, features and warranty. We favored models with published dimensions and established brands. Where a maker does not publish a spec, we note it rather than estimate it.

FAQ

What is the smallest vacuum sealer that heat-seals?

Among the models we compared, the Nesco VS-C1 Classic is the slimmest at 15.16 x 3.35 x 4.92 in., and the Anova Precision Vacuum Sealer is the lightest at 2.3 lb. Both heat-seal standard embossed bags up to about 11.8 in. wide.

Are compact vacuum sealers as good as full-size ones?

For a few bags a week, yes. They usually have weaker pumps, no roll storage and shorter duty cycles, so they struggle with big batches, wide cuts and wet food. If you seal dozens of bags at a time, buy a full-size or fan-cooled model.

What is the best portable vacuum sealer for travel or camping?

A rechargeable handheld such as Chef Preserve, which weighs 8.3 oz and charges by USB, per the brand. It needs no outlet but uses its own valve bags. For RVs and boats with power, Avid Armor pitches its USV1 chamber sealer at small spaces.

Is there a compact chamber vacuum sealer?

Yes. The Avid Armor USV1 measures 12 x 12 x 6.25 in. and weighs about 13 lb, per Avid Armor, and takes pouches up to 10 x 10 in. It is the smallest chamber machine in Avid Armor's line and handles liquids.

Can I store a vacuum sealer upright?

The FoodSaver PowerVac VS0150 is designed for vertical storage. Most other sealers store flat. Whatever you own, Nesco advises storing its sealers with the lid unlocked so the foam gaskets do not compress.

Verdict

The Anova Precision Vacuum Sealer is the best compact vacuum sealer for most small kitchens: 2.3 lb, simple, and backed by a 2-year warranty. Choose the Anova Precision Vacuum Sealer Pro if you want roll storage in a small footprint, Chef Preserve for true portability, and the Avid Armor USV1 if you need to seal liquids in a small space.
