Avid Armor, an American brand with customer care based in Kansas, has become the default name in home chamber sealers by doing one thing well: making chamber machines light enough to live in a kitchen. Its models weigh 13 to 27 lb, use dry pumps with no oil, and cost well below VacMaster's oil-pump machines. The catch is shallow chambers and plastic bodies on the cheaper models.

The current lineup has four models you can buy: the USV1, USV20, USV32 and JARMAX. (The USVX and USVXL were listed as unavailable on Avid Armor's site when we checked in October 2026.) Each Avid Armor chamber vacuum sealer below gets the same treatment: who it is for, what stands out, and what to watch.

Quick picks

  • Best Overall: Avid Armor USV20. Best for most home kitchens sealing meat, soups and sous vide portions.
  • Best Upgrade: Avid Armor USV32. Best for longer cuts and a stainless chamber.

  • Best for Mason Jars: Avid Armor JARMAX. Best for jar storage and dry goods, with normal pouch sealing too.

The Avid Armor models, reviewed

Avid Armor USV20: Best Overall

Who it's for: home cooks moving up from an external sealer who want soups, marinades and wet game sealed cleanly without a 70 lb machine.

The USV20 is the model most people should buy. The 11.5 in. seal bar takes pouches up to 11 x 10 in., enough for two steaks side by side, a pound of ground meat flattened, or a quart of stock. You set the vacuum time (15 to 60 seconds) and seal time yourself, or press one button for an automatic cycle. A marinate function, an accessory hose for jars and canisters, and a flat tempered glass lid are included, and the seal bar is user-replaceable.

The limits are the 3 in. chamber height and the molded plastic chamber. Thick roasts will not fit, and the plastic does not feel as solid as stainless. Measure your cabinets too: Avid Armor says the lid needs 17 in. of clearance to open. For most kitchens these are fair trade-offs for a machine you can lift with one hand.

Pros

  • Timed vacuum and seal control plus one-touch auto
  • Dry pump, no oil
  • Light enough to store away
  • Marinate mode and accessory hose included

Cons

  • 3 in. chamber height
  • Plastic chamber
  • 11 x 10 in. pouch limit is short for long cuts

Avid Armor USV32: Best Upgrade

Who it's for: hunters, anglers and meal preppers who need longer pouches and want a sturdier stainless build.

The USV32 keeps the 11.5 in. bar but extends the chamber to 12 in. long, so it takes 11 x 13 in. pouches: room for a long fillet or a family pack of chops. The chamber is stainless steel, the arched tempered glass lid adds headroom (chamber height is 3.5 in.), and the vacuum timer runs longer, from 20 to 99 seconds, for bigger loads. Avid Armor's Amazon listing describes a dual-wire seal bar, and the box includes a spare seal bar and lid gasket. Avid Armor also says it can seal Mylar bags up to 7 mil.

At 26.4 lb it is heavier, and it needs 22.5 in. of clearance to open, so it will not open under most upper cabinets. It was sold out on Avid Armor's own store but still listed on Amazon when we checked. If you seal longer cuts often, it is the better long-term machine.

Pros

  • 11 x 13 in. pouches
  • Stainless chamber and arched glass lid
  • 20 to 99 second vacuum range
  • Spare seal bar and gasket included

Cons

  • 22.5 in. lid clearance
  • Heavier than the USV20
  • Stock varies between retailers

Avid Armor USV1: Best Compact

Who it's for: apartments, couples and anyone who wants to try chamber sealing at the lowest price tier among established brands.

The USV1 (Ultra Series ONE) has a 12 x 12 in. footprint and stands just 6.25 in. tall, so it fits on almost any counter and stores easily in a cabinet. Instead of timers, it offers three vacuum levels, three seal settings, a one-touch auto cycle and progress lights, which makes it the easiest Avid Armor model to learn. It has a dry pump, a 10 in. seal bar, an accessory port with hose, and a flat glass lid.

The trade-off is capacity. The chamber is 2.25 in. tall and pouches max out at 10 x 10 in., so chicken breasts, burger patties and soup portions are fine, but big cuts are not. Experienced users may miss timed control.

Pros

  • Smallest, lightest Avid Armor chamber sealer
  • Presets with a short learning curve
  • Dry pump and accessory port

Cons

  • 2.25 in. chamber height
  • 10 x 10 in. maximum pouch
  • No timed vacuum control

Avid Armor JARMAX: Best for Mason Jars

Who it's for: people who store dry goods, dehydrated or freeze-dried food in mason jars and also seal meat in pouches.

The JARMAX is the only model here that fixes the shallow-chamber problem. Its 12 x 11 x 8.5 in. chamber (12 liters usable) holds six pint jars or four quart jars upright, plus six or more half-pints stacked on the included wire shelf. You vacuum the jars inside the chamber, which is faster and more reliable than a hose and lid attachment. It still seals pouches up to 10 x 13 in. on a 10.5 in. twin-wire bar, and adds adjustable vacuum time (25 to 99 seconds), a one-button marinate cycle and a removable silicone liner. The box includes 30 pouches, filler plates, a spare seal bar and a spare lid gasket.

Half-gallon jars do not fit inside, and at 16 x 14 x 10.5 in. it is the bulkiest Avid Armor. If you rarely seal jars, the USV20 is the better use of space. Our mason jar vacuum sealer guide compares other jar options, and how to vacuum seal mason jars covers the technique.

Pros

  • 8.5 in. chamber fits pint and quart jars
  • Twin-wire seal bar, marinate cycle, silicone liner
  • Generous starter kit with spare parts

Cons

  • Bulky if you rarely use jars
  • Half-gallon jars do not fit
  • Plastic chamber body

Anova Precision Chamber Vacuum Sealer: Best Alternative

If you mainly cook sous vide and like the idea of infused oils, compressed fruit and quick pickles, Anova's chamber sealer is the USV20's closest rival. It has an 11.8 in. seal bar, a 12 x 8.6 x 3 in. chamber, a 70 L/min dry pump rated at -0.95 bar, and dedicated Infuse/Extract, Compress/Pickle and Dry/Cool presets, with a 2-year warranty versus Avid Armor's 1. It does not publish its weight or offer timed vacuum control like the USV20. Read our Anova Precision chamber sealer review.

Pros

  • Cooking presets for infusion and compression
  • 2-year warranty

Cons

  • Same 3 in. depth limit as the USV20
  • Weight not published

How to choose an Avid Armor chamber vacuum sealer

Start with pouch size

Lay out what you seal most. If it fits in a 10 x 10 in. pouch, the USV1 is enough. For 11 x 10 in. (most steaks, chops and quart portions), the USV20. For long fillets, ribs or family packs that need 13 in. of length, the USV32. Avid Armor's own pouches come in matching sizes, from 6 x 8 in. up to 11 x 13 in. in 250-packs, plus a 300-count assorted pack. See our chamber vacuum sealer bags guide.

Then check chamber height

Chamber height (2.25 in. on the USV1, 3 in. on the USV20, 3.5 in. on the USV32, 8.5 in. on the JARMAX) decides how thick an item can be. For bone-in roasts and whole birds, no USV model is deep enough; look at the JARMAX or a VacMaster in our best chamber vacuum sealers.

Measure lid clearance

This is the spec that sends machines back. The USV20 needs 17 in. to open and the USV32 22.5 in. If your sealer will sit under upper cabinets (often 18 in. above the counter), the USV1 or USV20 are the safer choices, or plan to slide the machine forward to open it.

Presets or timers?

The USV1's presets are easiest for beginners. Timed control on the USV20, USV32 and JARMAX lets you stop short for bread or berries and run longer for big loads. If you plan to seal a lot of wet game or delicate fish, timers are worth having; our best vacuum sealers for meat guide goes into that use.

Plastic or stainless?

The USV32 has a stainless chamber; the USV1, USV20 and JARMAX use molded plastic chambers with glass lids. Plastic works fine but scratches more easily, so wipe it with a soft cloth, not an abrasive pad. Stainless is easier to sanitize after raw meat and fish and better suited to daily heavy use, which is one more reason the USV32 is the pick for hunters and anglers. The JARMAX softens the plastic issue with a removable silicone liner you can take out and wash.

Spare parts and upkeep

Dry pumps remove the biggest chore, but chamber sealers still have wear parts: the seal bar (heating wire and its cover tape) and the lid gasket. Avid Armor describes the USV20's seal bar as inexpensive and user-replaceable, and the USV32 and JARMAX ship with a spare seal bar and a spare lid gasket in the box. Keep the gasket clean and dry, and check that it sits evenly in its groove before each session; a gasket that is twisted or dirty is the usual reason a chamber will not reach full vacuum.

Food safety basics

A dry pump and a tight seal do not make food shelf-stable. Clemson Cooperative Extension says vacuum packaging is not a substitute for refrigeration or freezing, and FDA's seafood guidance warns that removing oxygen can favor Clostridium botulinum in low-acid foods. Keep sealed perishables at 40 °F or below, per USDA FSIS, or frozen. Vacuum-sealed jars are not canned.

How we chose

We did not test these machines. We compared every current model on Avid Armor's product pages and its official Amazon listings, cross-checked dimensions and pouch limits, noted stock status, and looked at recurring themes in owner feedback, such as the learning curve with timed controls on the USV20. Only specs Avid Armor publishes appear here.

FAQ

Which Avid Armor chamber vacuum sealer is best?

The USV20 suits most home kitchens: an 11.5 in. seal bar, timed vacuum from 15 to 60 seconds, a dry pump and about 17.5 lb. Choose the USV32 for longer 11 x 13 in. pouches and a stainless chamber, the USV1 for small spaces, and the JARMAX if you seal mason jars.

What is the difference between the Avid Armor USV20 and USV32?

Both have 11.5 in. seal bars and dry rocker pumps. The USV32 adds a stainless steel chamber, an arched glass lid, a slightly deeper 3.5 in. chamber, longer 11 x 13 in. pouches and a 20 to 99 second vacuum range, but weighs 26.4 lb and needs 22.5 in. of lid clearance.

Do Avid Armor chamber sealers need oil?

No. Avid Armor lists dry pumps on its chamber models, so there is no oil to change.

What bags fit an Avid Armor chamber sealer?

Smooth chamber pouches within each model's limit: up to 10 x 10 in. for the USV1, 11 x 10 in. for the USV20, and 11 x 13 in. for the USV32. The JARMAX takes pouches up to 10 x 13 in. Avid Armor sells its own pouches, and other smooth chamber pouches of the right size work too.

Can Avid Armor chamber sealers vacuum seal mason jars?

All four current models have an accessory port and hose for jar attachments. The JARMAX goes further, with a chamber deep enough to vacuum pint and quart jars inside it.

Verdict

The Avid Armor USV20 is the Avid Armor chamber vacuum sealer to buy for most kitchens: capable with liquids, simple to own and easy to store. Step up to the USV32 if you need 13 in. pouches and have the lid clearance, choose the USV1 for tight spaces, and pick the JARMAX only if jars are a regular part of your routine.
